Basking in the glow of new presidential leadership like...
Today is a momentous day.
1. HELLOOOO BIDEN AND KAMALA!!! Oh, how I am so excited to see you. I welcome you with open arms.
2. Today marks one year since a patient in the US was diagnosed with COVID-19 by the CDC.
3. I’ve been a family medicine PA for 6 months!! (July 20th was my start date).
4. MY NEW WEBSITE IS LIVE!!! twistoflemons.com (ty @lennoxcreativeco for bringing her out of the shadows).
I am thrilled for a new dawn of leadership with more consistent and less confusing guidelines to help extinguish the rampant spread of this virus. One that doesn’t incite violence, misogyny, racism, and xenophobia. For more equitable access to healthcare for my current and future patients. And to continue to share all of the above on my platform that I am oh so grateful to have.

I have the day off from work today, which has been a wonderful opportunity to dig back into my own accountability with anti-racism work. Not just “peace and equality” and blindly optimistic words. But instead revisiting and recommitting to my action item list.
5 highlights and actionable to-do list items below:
- Updating my little library. A combination of anti-racist AND fiction works (seen here).
- Continuing to buy BIPOC: a few of my favorites here: @brownandcoconut, @golde, @omathelabel. Not pictured: @urbangrape for the 🍷 and @thejungalow (my favorite sun mirror in my living room).
- Supporting local non-profits with a donation (monthly if you can!). Within my community, this is @the.courage.campaign (founded by @blackgirlmagicmama) and @yougoodsis (co-founded by @rachdoes.yoga and @jayleetheyogi). And beyond my local community, @thelovelandfoundation.
- Teeing up a podcast playlist for the week - 1619, facing ourselves, and code switch are in my current rotation.
- Something applicable to my field! Currently looking for CME (continuing medical education) re: dismantling racism and inequity in healthcare. will update when I find something, but if you have resources please let me know! I would DEFINITELY recommend the book Medical Apartheid for those in healthcare as a place to start.

Did a quick little dance yoga class this AM (comin

Did a quick little dance yoga class this AM (coming to IGTV soon!) and in the beginning talked about my intentionality of movement - joy, abundance, taking up space. Rather than shrinking, and feeling small.
Growing up as a competitive dancer, I was conditioned to crave the thin ideal. Admittedly, I naturally had a lot of thin privilege, but my relationship to movement was…complicated. I’d go to the gym before dance and took up running on the weekends after a long and active morning of waitressing at a local diner. At 18, I ended up in a back brace from an injury from all this movement, so I had to pause.
When I went to college, I essentially went through puberty for the first time and had to grow to appreciate this new body in a new way. And appreciate it, I did not.
It’s funny. When I was in middle and even high school, all I wanted was to fill out my jeans a bra just a little more (picture me in bed at night reciting the “we must, we must, we must increase our bust” line from Judy Blume’s ‘are you there God it’s me Margaret.’) And then I went to college and grew, and all I wanted was to be smaller.
It took YEARS of therapy, unfollowing certain ideals on the internet, and creating a robust foundation for my dreams and passions for the thoughts surrounding body to go from a scream to a whisper. When I am most engaged and excited about what I am DOING and CONTRIBUTING, I care much much less about how I look when doing so.
I don’t spend much energy talking about my body because I want to be brain positive first - emphasizing goals, dreams, passions - the DOING rather than the looking. And I never want to be a source of body comparison to others. But it certainly is an important part of my evolutionary fabric, and how I now frame and show movement and body image on my page.
My intention and declaration now and always is to feel and be vibrant and bountiful. Take up space. Continue to grow and evolve. Feel grounded, stable, and learn how to move in a way that prevents pain and injury. Always a qualitative description, never quantitative (steps taken, calories burned, miles ran).
